Mimaki Engineering Co.,Ltd., a leading manufacturer of wide format inkjet printers, today introduced the world’s fastest sublimation inkjet printer along with a new ink, designed to enhance productivity for the textile apparel and soft signage markets. The Mimaki TS500 -1800 printer and the new Sb300 sublimation ink are expected to be released in June 2012.

The TS500-1800 features a number of new capabilities that set it apart in the marketplace, including:

Unmatched printing speed for sublimation paper at 150m2/h in high-speed mode. TheTS500-1800 uses newly developed printheads that achieve a maximum speed in four- or six-colour mode. The printer includes six printheads, with three staggered

Mist removal filter – The mist removal filter prevents problems caused by ink mists and enhances the stability of print operations by suctioning the mist inside the printer

Mimaki Degassing Module – The Mimaki degassing module (MDM-20) eliminates the gasses or bubbles that can occur in inks during the printing process, decreasing the likelihood of nozzle blockage and improving the accuracy of ink dot placement. In addition, this module enables the printer to use undegassed bottled inks instead of conventional degassed ink packs, thus reducing ink costs

New dye sublimation ink - Mimaki has developed a new ink, optimized for dye sublimation printing and for use with the TS500-1800. Sb300 ink offers an affordable price, dries quickly and produces brilliant colours. Sb300 ink is available in six colours (K,Bl,M,Y,Lbl,Lm).

Auto Media Feeder (AMF) – Mimaki’s unique Auto Media Feeder provides stable feeding and take-up of print media, eliminating much of the need for operator intervention during printing

Larger Roll Media Size – The TS500-1800 can accept rolls of media up to 60kg and 300mm in diameter, further improving operator productivity by eliminating the need for frequent media changes. Larger orders can be continuously printed without interruption, or batches of smaller orders using the same media can be easily handled

The JV400-130/160SUV prints in four colours (CMYK) at speeds of up to 18 square meters per hour. This truly unique printer combines the flexibility of solvent with the durability of UV-cured inks using newly developed Mimaki inks. In the printing process, the solvent component is absorbed by the ink-receiving layer of the media and the pigment is settled into the media. Printed ink is then cured with a UV process, resulting in a smooth, glossy appearance, which simulates coating, yet maintains the bright colours expected of a solvent printer. These brilliant solvent UV prints will surely attract attention, satisfying even the most demanding customers.

UV curing also results in strong resistance to scratching and weather. Prints exit the printer completely dry, ready for immediate post-processing.

Mimaki is launching the Mimaki TS34-1800A inkjet dye sublimation printer. This new printer was designed specifically for the sublimation transfer market with high speed and quality in mind. Sublimation transfer printing is widely utilised for sportswear applications due to the elasticity and quick-drying capability of polyester material and in the growing market of soft signage applications, such as flags, retail in-store banners, and tapestries.

Main features

High speed printing up to 32m2/h
With a staggered array of two newly developed print heads, the new TS34-1800A is capable of printing up to 32m2/h at 540 x 720 dpi. Furthermore, the machine can achieve a printing speed of 17.7m2/h in 6-colour mode at the same resolution, responding to the needs for superior quality prints, with minimal amount of grainy appearance and smooth gradations. These features make the TS34-1800A suitable for both large-sized soft signs and apparel applications, which require quick response and fine image quality respectively.

Improved productivity through unattended continuous printing
In addition to increased print speed and quality, various useful functions also contribute to the improved productivity of the machine by enabling automated continuous operation.

UISS(1) function enables setting two ink cartridges per colour in 4-colour mode. When an ink cartridge is used up, the system switches automatically to the second cartridge of the same colour, preventing the printing process from stopping due to running out of ink.
MBIS(2) provides large volume continuous ink supply with 2-litre ink aluminium bags. As a result, ink costs and environmental footprints are substantially reduced.
Automatic drying fan(3) increases the ink drying speed remarkably, enabling continuous media take-up even during high speed printing. Consequently, printing efficiency improves dramatically.
(1) Uninterrupted Ink Supply System *Effective only in 4-colour mode.
(2) Mimaki Bulk Ink System (optional)
(3) Automatic drying fan is optional

Print Head Maintenance for the Holiday Season

Print Head maintenance, we all know that it is necessary, and while some of us consider it to be their most important task of the day (they are right), most of us see it as some kind of burden. Print Heads are among the most important parts of any inkjet printing system and so proper maintenance will result in optimal print quality, extend the Print Head life and will reduce running costs.During the Holiday Season, our printers are generally used at lot less if not at all. This requires some special Print Head maintenance for most of the printers out there. We do advise you to consult your Operators Manual or Maintenance Guide on the tasks that need to be performed on your printer when it will be unused for a longer period of time, but here is some general advise to get you started.
Solvent InkThe main ingredient of solvent inks are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), organic chemical compounds that have high vapour pressures. It is never a good idea to leave solvent ink into the Print Heads when the printer will be shut down for a period longer then a working day. Dried ink residue in the Print Heads is the primary cause of irreparable or recoverable Print Heads.
♣ flush the Print Heads (either with the appropriate Maintenance Liquid or by draining the ink) note: make sure no ink is left in the tubes and the print heads (discharge completely)

♣ manually clean the Print Head surface with appropriate Maintenance Liquid and Knitted Polyester wipe (or lint free cleaning swabs) note: use moderate pressure when using wipes or swabs on a Print Head surface and always consult your Operators Manual (For instance: Mimaki advises strongly against rubbing the nozzle surface)

♣ clean the carriage bottom plate

♣ clean the wipers with the appropriate wiper fluidnote: this might be a good time to check the condition of your wipers and replace them if necessary

♣ clean the cappers with the appropriate maintenance fluid and check whether they still cap properly
UV InkThese inks consist mainly of acrylic monomers with an initiator package. After printing, the ink is cured (hardened) by exposure to strong UV-light. Therefore these inks are less critical than solvent based inks. When an UV Ink printer will be shut down for a longer period of time, a different approach is justified. In general when these type of printers will not be used for a period of 2 to 4 days, it is OK to leave ink in the tubes and Print Heads. The UV Ink is used as a way to keep the Print Head surface moisturized; it gets hard when exposed to UV light and does not contain aggressive solvents that could damage the Print Head over a longer period of time. Nevertheless, the following general practice applies:
♣ manually clean the Print Head surface with appropriate Maintenance Liquid and Knitted Polyester wipe (or lint free cleaning swabs) note: use moderate pressure when using wipes or swabs on a Print Head surface and always consult your Operators Manual

♣ clean the carriage bottom plate (don’t touch the Print Heads)

♣ clean the wipers with the appropriate wiper fluidnote: this might be a good time to check the condition of your wipers and replace them if necessary

♣ clean the cappers (or capper station) with the appropriate maintenance fluid and check whether they still cap properly
REMARKS

♣ When using an inkjet printing system based on Spectra Print Heads (not all of them, consult your Operators Manual or Maintenance Guide), do not leave a mixture of ink and solvent-based maintenance liquid in the heads: they will cause ‘gelling’ and make the head hard to recover.

♣ Always avoid contact of any kind of solvent or aggressive cleaning products with the Print Head circuit boards and backplanes.
Other Holiday Season maintenanceWhile you’re there, it might be a good time to do an overall maintenance of your printer. Think about general cleaning of covers and exterior parts of the printer. Clean the rails, check lenses en sensors and clean them if necessary, check the ink filters and check and empty waste containers or trays. Furthermore you can clean the encoder strip with isopropyl alcohol For UV Ink based printers and check the UV lamp filters and replace them if necessary.

b)	LH-100 – Hard ink with better scratch and chemical resistance that can be used for industrial marketing as well. Has a wider color gamut and is available in clear.

c)	LF-200 – Flexible ink with better adhesion, durability and elasticity of up to 200% to print on films, membrane switches, or any other materials that need to be folded

d)	PR-100 – Inkjet primer that increases ink adhesion of LF-140/LH-100. Produces great

improvements on materials such as PET, acrylic, glass, and metals. Primer application abilities.

Automatic primer application – Instead of having to apply primer manually The UJF-3042FX does it automatically through the inkjet system. Inkjet primer cartridges (available in 220 and 600ml sizes) are simply inserted into the corresponding ink slot. Simultaneous primer application – The primer does not require extra printing time as it is simultaneously applied with the process colors during printing, thus streamlining the printer’s workflow significantly without compromising speed.

Selective primer application – The automatic primer application function enables the application of primer in selective areas only. This means areas where no application of primer is necessary will not be primed, enabling multi-material printing designs and applications.

Mimaki is always on the leading edge of the printing industry. The UJF-3042FX is another example of how we set ourselves apart from the competition with advanced, unparalleled machines. We look forward to continuing to provide you with these great products. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
